I vaguely recall the movie Of Mice And Men but one thing I remembered was a scene about early American settlers, I believe, atop their horses, would claim as much land they could by enclosing their territory with stakes marking your four corners. As people grow in number and lands became smaller, it was best coded into law how one acquires a piece of land.
